O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. She was able to advance to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for the performance. O'Neil had received high praise from panel of judges. However, she suffered significant defeats during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, followed by the second place. It was a shock to the judges and they suggested that the public vote for Melissa as one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil, who had been consistently giving stellar performances since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and became the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
